Mary Spencer Leads Silver Gloves to Gold at
Empire State Senior Games
The Deposit Courier, Wednesday
June 30, 2004
Mary Spencer, 50+, of Deposit, struck gold with a grand
slam home run in the medal game at the Empire State Senior
Games on June 12-13, in Cortland, NY.
Spencer's 9-for-13 in the medal game helped to push the
Silver Gloves into the first place gold
medal position. The team won the 50-plus tournament by outscoring
their opponents 65-18 in three games. This
not only got them gold medals, it also qualified the team
to compete in the June 2005 nationals at Penn Hills, PA.
"It was just one of those days when everything went
right with the bat," Spencer said.
The Triple Cities based, Silver Gloves slow-pitch softball
team is comprised of women ages 50 and up residing in the
Southern Tier of New York and surrounding area. Most of the
members of the Silver Gloves team also play on league teams
throughout the area. Spencer regularly plays on the Deposit
BES Splinters team.
She said that she has been playing
softball for 24 years. "I
didn't play in high school, but we always played ball in
the yard at home," she said.
Proving that 50 is really not too old to play ball, she
plays with her sister Kate and 13 other ladies on the Deposit
team. "Of the 14 ladies that play on our team, five
or six have played for over 20 years," she said.
When she's not playing softball, Mary Spencer can be found
behind her desk at the Courier front office.
Spencer's stats in the Empire State Senior Games are very
impressive:
First Game: 2 for 5; 2 runs; 2 triples, and 4 RBI92s.
Second Game: 2 for 3; 2 runs; 2 doubles; 3 RBI92s.
Third Game: 5 for 5; 4 runs; 1 triple; 1 grand slam; 9 RBI92s.
This gives her a total of: 116 RBI92s; I Grand Slam; 3 triples;
2 doubles; and 3 singles for the tournament.
Congratulations Mary on a job well done!
