The
Silver Gloves were organized in 1997 as a 50+ team by Phyllis Meade,
who was team co-captain for many years. Although Phyllis is no longer
playing with the team, the members of the Silver Gloves appreciate all
that she did to establish the organization. The team went on to win the
gold medal at the 1998 Empire State Senior Games in Syracuse which
qualified them to compete at the Senior Olympics the following year in
Orlando, Florida, thus making them the first senior women's team to
represent New York State at the Senior Nationals (Olympics).
The Silver Gloves currently have a 50+ team and a 55+ team. Many
of the members played softball when they were younger, while others
have always played. There are also some players ages 47-49, as they can
compete in some of the tournaments with the 50+ team.
Competitive
events they've been in include the Salt City Senior Classic on Memorial
Day Weekend in Syracuse; SSWS and SSWC Qualifying Tournaments;
Dorchester Canadians Seniors International Softball Tournaments in
London, Ontario; the Empire State Senior Games in Syracuse; the Senior
Olympics in Orlando, Baton Rouge, Virginia Beach and Pittsburgh. The
Silver Gloves are six time State champions at the Empire State Senior
Games. In
2004. the Silver Gloves took gold medals at the Empire State Games in the 50+ and 55+ age groups
and sent two teams to the 2005 Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh, PA.
Many
of the Silver Gloves members play on the City of Binghamton Softball
League during the summer. A 40+ league was formed in 2005, with 5
teams. This allows the team members to compete against women of
similar ages.
The
Silver Gloves was formed to satisfy the needs and desires
of women over 50 yearning to play the sport they have so much
loved and enjoyed in their younger years. But more importantly
it provides an opportunity for women to compete with women
their own age, to become better players, to share in the camaraderie
of women all across the nation, to engage in a healthy life
style. Competition has no age barriers. Come watch one of
our games and see for yourself. Better yet, don't be a spectator,
come join us.
